What is enamel?

Enamel is a coloured glass powder that is sifted onto the surface of steel and then vitrified at very high temperatures in a powerful kiln dedicated to enamelling. Under the heat, the powder transforms and fuses to steel, creating a smooth, glossy surface. Enamel does not fade over time or when exposed to UV rays, making it an exceptionally durable material well suited to outdoor use.

Do the colours withstand sunlight and the elements?

Enamel is a material that holds up extremely well over time and in all kinds of weather. Objects and works of art made with enamel hundreds of years ago can still be found today, with colours that remain as vivid as when they were first created. This is one of the greatest qualities of enamel: its colour remains stable despite exposure to sunlight and changes in temperature.

Is every plaque unique?

Each plaque is handmade by us. Enamel can be a little unpredictable. It reacts to heat in its own particular way, and no two firings are exactly alike. Small variations can appear during firing: a grain of glass may shift, or the surface may react slightly differently from one plaque to another.

These small particularities are part of the making process and contribute to the unique character of each plaque. We see them as part of the charm of the material rather than as imperfections.

How do I care for my plaque?

To clean your plaque, simply use a soft cloth and soapy water, then rinse and dry. Avoid abrasive products, steel wool, or anything that could scratch the surface. No treatment or protective product is necessary.

—

How do I install my plaque? Is the hardware included?

Each plaque comes with a drilling template, an installation guide, and rubber washers to protect the plaque during installation.

Hardware is not included, as the type of screws and anchors needed depends on the material of your wall. We recommend using stainless steel or galvanized hardware to prevent rust and staining on the plaque.

Installation is simple but requires a little care. Most importantly, do not overtighten the screws: enamel is still glass. Excessive or uneven pressure can cause it to crack. Simply tighten the screws by hand until the plaque is securely in place.

If you are unsure which hardware to use, we recommend asking for advice at your local hardware store.

How long will it take to receive my plaque?

We produce our plaques in small batches. We are a small workshop, operating on a human scale. Each plaque passes through our hands, one step at a time.

The estimated dispatch date is shown in the drop-down menu when you select your plate. Please allow approximately 4 to 5 working days for delivery after your order has been dispatched. A flat-rate delivery charge applies to all orders.

Thank you for your patience!

Do you make custom plaques?

For now, we only offer our original model: a blue plaque with white numbers, using the specific typeface found on Montréal address plaques.
We do not offer custom colours, formats, typefaces, or combinations. However, we are currently working on expanding our range, including white plaques with black numbers and green plaques with white numbers.

What should I do if my plaque arrives damaged?

Open the package as soon as you receive it and inspect your plaque before putting the packaging away. If you notice a crack, chip, or any other damage, take photos of the plaque and the packaging and contact us within 24 hours of delivery. Keep the packaging until the issue has been resolved and do not install the plaque. If the damage occurred during shipping and can be documented with photos, we will take the necessary steps with Canada Post and send you a replacement plaque.

—

What if my plaque breaks after delivery?

Each plaque is carefully inspected before being packed and shipped. We have high standards for our work, and no plaque leaves the studio unless it meets our criteria. Enamel is still glass, however: a drop, an impact against a hard surface, or excessive or uneven pressure, particularly during installation, can cause it to crack or break. We do not cover damage that occurs after delivery due to improper handling or installation, impact, or the use of unsuitable hardware.

—

Can I return or exchange my plaque?

Because our plaques are made to order with the number selected at the time of purchase, they cannot be returned or exchanged. We therefore encourage you to carefully check your number and order information before completing your purchase. If your plaque arrives damaged during shipping, please contact us within 24 hours of delivery so we can help you.

—

Do you restore old plaques?

We do not restore original or historic address plaques. Instead, we seek to keep this part of Montréal’s heritage alive by continuing the tradition of making them and preserving the craft behind them, through the creation of new plaques inspired by the historic Montréal design.

Do you ship across Canada?

We currently ship throughout Canada. At this time, we do not offer international shipping.
